The Fantasy World of Miss Dior Cherie

I don't know what it is, but I want to be just like the girl in the new Miss Dior Cherie ad campaign. Maybe it's the fact that she's sailing over Paris with a grip of candy-colored balloons or that her dress is an adorable hot-pink bubble mini. Or maybe it's because her shoes are pink and ruffled or that the word "Dior" is spelled out in crinkled satin ribbon. At any rate, I want to be her, and it has very little to do with the perfume bottle she's holding.

After happening upon this ad in Vogue about a week ago, I immediately felt the urge to go forth and buy myself a bottle of Miss Dior Cherie. This is not to say that I am particularly fond of the fragrance or anything. In fact, when I first saw the ad and felt inclined to purchase it, I hadn't even tested the perfume yet.

The new campaign for Christian Dior perfume Miss Dior Cherie includes both print ads and a 15-second commercial. The print ad featured most prominently is what I described above. The commercial was directed by Sofia Coppola. Both parts of the campaign feature the dirty blonde locks and sizzling blue eyes of Belarus-born model Maryna Linchuk, a choice that infuses the ads with both sweetness and ferocity. As the new face of Miss Dior Cherie, Linchuk follows models Riley Keough and Lily Donaldson, both of whom were just not quite right for the campaign. Keough was a little too rough around the edges and Donaldson a bit too willowy and frail.

The campaign's most prevalent themes-Paris, youth, beauty, independence, glamour, whimsy, femininity-cater to the same sort of audience as such past perfumes as Vera Wang Princess and Marc Jacobs Daisy. All three ad campaigns for these perfumes feature young women, displaying the perfume bottle and looking very carefree and independent.

More particularly, the Vera Wang ads featured an up-and-coming "it-girl," dressing up young starlet Camille Belle in flowing dresses and topping off her dark locks with a golden crown. In short, it was the perfect fragrance for daddy's little princess-girls that are spoiled, beautiful and adored, or just those who want to be spoiled, beautiful and adored. Needless to say, I was a fan.

I think the Vera Wang ads hit on a key market strategy when they decided to focus their campaign on the ideas of status and privilege. Whether or not this was a cognitive choice, it's hard to say. But it was pretty evident to me at least that after print ads for the Princess perfume started circulating that many girls started to become obsessed. It was the kind of thing that girls plastered all over their Facebooks and MySpaces; something that was delicately torn out of Teen Vogue and taped onto school binders. To be a Vera Wang Princess girl was to actually be that girl in the print ads. If you owned the fragrance, you subscribed to the image that its advertisements portrayed, and you were a bona fide princess.

The ads for Miss Dior Cherie fall into the same pattern, which was a pretty successful one in targeting the young girl demographic. If anything, the Miss Dior Cherie ads have an appeal that is somewhat more universal. While the prevalent sentiments highlighted in the Vera Wang ads evoke the image of someone cute and bossy but also very young, those of the Dior ads bring to mind any woman who is gorgeous and classy but also exciting and a bit spontaneous.

The fact that Sofia Coppola directed the commercial certainly lends a bit of Marie Antoinette decadence to the campaign. Coppola's 2006 film, "Marie Antoinette," is a modern-day twist on the infamous life of Marie Antoinette that-through an emphasis on opulent clothes, food and merriment-makes the 18th-century queen look like an heiress from the Upper East Side. The commercial plays with this same idea, using fun, upbeat music (Brigitte Bardot's "Moi, Je Joue") and the background of Paris to evoke identical themes. In the 15-second clip, Maryna Linchuk flutters about Paris smelling roses, kissing boys, spritzing on some Miss Dior Cherie and ultimately achieving lift-off with a bundle of pink and blue balloons. And, lest we forget, the commercial had its debut during the first commercial break of "Gossip Girl"-a clear indicator of the perfume's target demographic.

It is evident that the ad campaign for Miss Dior Cherie is trying to hook girls with a certain image and thereby influence them to buy the perfume. I must say that while I adore the ad campaign, particularly the playful artistry of the commercial, I still have yet to adopt the fragrance. But I just keep telling myself that, even though I don't wear the fragrance, I can still be a Miss Dior Cherie girl at heart.
